I wasn’t too sure what to do for my picture frame. I started off with a random shape. Me and some friends were talking about the lion king so I decided to make mine African animals. The giraffe came first and was the most difficult. I had to let it sit for a day with a ball of paper underneath the neck so it wouldn’t collapse. Then I made the lion who was rather easy besides the ears. Then the elephant. The elephant looked amazing to start off with and the paint looked amazing until I fired it. I had to reglaze over the elephant with a clear glaze in order to retain some of its cuteness. On the giraffe I put brown bits of glass and I assumed it would melt into brown spots but instead it turned an ugly light blue. I had to reglaze over it twice but a lot of the blue still stayed and thus the moldy giraffe was born
The Lorax is an icon and my friend made a paper mache Lorax last year so I decided to follow on her footsteps and make a wearable one. I made a wire base and paper mached over it. Instead of painting it, we tried to use felt. It was a good idea at first but looking back on it, it seems pretty uneven. The mustache was cardboard and we took a yellow boa and cut the feathers off it then glued them on. There were a few feathers that didn’t cooperate but overall it seems to work decently. I ended up giving the mask to Ms. Whiteside. She had been asking me to make her a piece for a year and I finally decided that the mask would be the one I give her.
I used a piece that I made on the pottery wheel for this project. It was my first piece on the wheel that didn’t collapse so I decided to use it. For how small it is, it is extremely heavy. Pretty much the whole bottom is solid. I definitely need to practice on the wheel that was I don’t make the same mistake again. I started with red stripes on the outside and did a light blue coat over it. Then I did light green splotches followed by dark green splotches. I should have had a layer in between those 2 layers to make them pop a bit more. I wasn’t really sure what pattern to do so I randomly added stuff until I felt like it was unique. Then I added black details but I couldn’t get the lines thin enough so it ended up looking ugly. I should have experimented more with underglazes since it is such a fun medium.
To start this project off I used a wire foundation and stuffed it with paper towels to hold its shape. I then paper mached over the wire for 3-4 layers until it could support itself on its own. After that I added a finishing layer so it would be smoother than the regular paper mache. I painted the base of it back and added colors until I was halten with how it looked. To make the fins I cut cardboard and used superglue to give it depth and texture. From there I went to the store and bought the eyes and eyelashes because why not. The teeth we’re the most tedious part since I had to make 50 out of clay. I also had to lay them out before I glued them to make sure they fit and looked decent. I’m not too sure why I picked this object. I looked over at my lamp one day and realized it looked boring. Plus I just watched finding Nemo the previous night and remember that anglerfish existed
During class one day one of the students said that I looked like a baby giraffe. That gave me an idea for the surrealist project since we have baby head molds and adding that to a giraffe would just be bizarre. I was also going to give it baby legs and make cups out of different baby parts. I also decided to combine it with the pouring vessel so i made the body and neck hollow. I started off by using a mold to make the baby head. I then made the neck by wrapping clay around a broom handle, then attached the two. The body was the most difficult part. I had to take one of the molds and round it off with paper towels then I had to layer clay on the top. Once I was happy with the shape, I had to cut it off and recombine them. I put the 3 pieces together and left it to dry but I forgot we had winter break and he fully dried up so I had to fire him. I don't have enough time to finish him or the cups so I'm going to finish him next year when I have another sculpture class.
In week 1 I worked on my Object To Art project. My idea is to take an ordinary lamp and turn it into an angler fish. So far I have finished the base out of wire and I plan to wrap it and tin foil. After that I plan to paper mache it.
